Holy Angels ran out to a 2-0 lead then had to hold on as they beat Moorhead 6-4 to win the 2005 Class AA Boys State Hockey Championship Saturday night (March 5). Jay Barriball scored a pair of goals for the Stars (although he was incorrectly credited with a 3rd goal, an empty netter). Barriball's first goal gave Holy Angels that 2-0 lead midway through the first period. Moorhead, who also lost last year's state championship game, closed to within 2-1 on a Matt Becker goal in the 2nd period.

Holy Angels led 5-3 late in the 3rd period when Moorhead's Cory Johnson scored what appeared to be the Spuds 4th goal. But officials ruled that Johnson's stick was above the cross bar and nullifying the goal. Television replays showed otherwise. After pulling its goalie Moorhead did close to 5-4 with 1:01 to go. The empty net goal, actually scored by Taylor Matson, provided the final margin.

Earlier in the day, Warroad beat Totino Grace for the class A championship 4-3 in double overtime. Aaron Marvin got the gamewinning goal for the Warriors. Warroad also won the Class A title in 2003. Announced attendance for the AA championship was 17,207. 6,559 were there for the Class A titlel.
